Well, it finally happened…I’m a published author! Yay!! Today is an exciting day for myself and colleagues. Our book, Living as Mapmakers: Charting a Course With Children Guided by Parent Knowledge, is ready to be ordered through Sense Publishers. I’ve posted previously about the immense knowledge that a parent holds for their child (read about parental engagement here). In our book, we discuss the role that a parent plays in the education of a child. As teachers, we often share the knowledge that we hold within the context of teaching, but the knowledge that we share as parents or with parents is rarely discussed.
Using the metaphor of maps, we teachers discuss the journey each of us have travelled alongside parents in our classrooms, as well as the journey many of us are taking with our own children. This book serves as an invitation to parents and teachers to look closely at the knowledge that both parents and teachers hold in the education of the child.
Of course, I encourage you as a parent, an educator, or both, to pick this book up and read it from cover to cover! However, in all seriousness, it’s truly a beautiful and honest account of our journey’s as educators. I am so proud to be a part of this incredible piece of work and so fortunate to have worked with such a knowledgeable and open group of individuals. They are inspiring and the work that they have done with families within their classroom is humbling.
